One problem I have is with home decor. I LOVE decorating my home. I especially have a weakness for pillows and shiny things. I am no longer allowed to go to Tai Pan Trading by myself because I will literally fill up my shopping cart with the most expensive items that I don’t need. Since I live in an apartment I don’t have enough room to buy too many things, so that helps. But, I have had to figure out ways to decorate without going over my budget.
Tips:
1.
When you know what item you want, plan it in your budget. The reason for the budget is to SAVE MONEY so if there’s something you want such as a new mirror (I have been wanting a new mirror) then set aside a certain amount of money each month for it. By the time you’ve saved up enough money to buy it then you won’t feel guilty. And you’ll still be in your budget. Win-Win!
2.
Have someone go shopping with you, such as your husband. I know it can be such a downer but if you know that you have a spending habit take someone with you. I take my husband with me every time I go to Tai Pan since he knows my budget and he’s able to keep me in control when I see some new candlesticks that I need want.
3.
Try to find places that have discounted decor items so you aren’t spending up the wazoo for that crate you want. There are plenty of places that offer discounted prices for AMAZING home decor items, you just have to do some searching (or not because I shared my top 3 places to find discounted decor items below).
4.
See if you can make it instead. Now, this only works some of the time. If you have the materials or you can buy the materials to make it for a lot cheaper than actually buying the item, go for it. Try your hand at crafting and go over to Pinterest, I guarantee you will find a tutorial for that crocheted pillow. Plus, it can be fun to make it yourself, there’s a sense of pride that goes along with it.
5.
YARD SALES – I LOVE YARD SALES. I seriously beg my husband every weekend to go with me. You can find some of the best stuff there. (Granted, you may have to sand it down and throw some paint on it). This is the best way to find cheap home decor items that are larger, such as tables and chairs. Check your local listings such as the newspaper or even search Facebook yard sale pages in your town to find some yard sales close to you.
6.
Finally, if you are serious about saving money and sticking to your budget you just have to be serious about it and stick to your budget. Only focus on buying the necessities instead of your wants. Like I said in my savings post, you have to just start. Ultimately, you have to want to change and save your money. I know that my addiction to pillows is just that, an addiction. If I really want to save money I have to remember that I don’t need a pillow for every month.
Those are my tips to help you stick within your budget while indulging in your decor desires. Below are some of my FAVORITE places to find the best (and cheapest) decor items.
Places to go
1. I like to decorate for the different holidays/seasons. I have a mantle in my living room that like to dress up with decor. Instead of getting new items every holiday or season I have turned to printables! You know what the best part is? Most of the ones I find are free!!! If they’re not free they are still a lot cheaper than anything you will get at the store. I use printables to decorate with:
- Banners
- Pictures
- Inspirational Quotes
- Anything else I can find
Here are some of my favorite places to find my printables: Little Gold Pixel, Chicfetti, It’s Always Autumn, Yellow Bliss Road.
2. Another place that I love to find decor items is Decor Steals at decorsteals.com, they offer one new decor item daily that is ON SALE up to 80% off. Their stuff is amazing and definitely helps out when trying to stick within my budget but just need something new to spruce up my home. So far I have been pretty happy with the decor items they have (it’s nothing that is cheap or breaks easily).
3. My next place I go is Target. Honestly, Target is one of the places that I look at first for finding the best deals on decor items. I have bought pillows, furniture, bedding, picture frames, mirrors, numerous decor items from there and have been very happy with them! I told you, I LOVE pillows and am always looking for new pillows to change out on my couch.
I found these pillows at Target and have been so delighted with them that I haven’t switched them out since.
4. A place that I have recently found and fallen in love with is jane.com. It’s an online store with women’s clothes, decor items, and kids stuff. They have gone to different boutiques and are selling some of their items at a discount. I have an obsession with them now and look on their site daily, (I can’t stop won’t stop.) They have a lot of the modern more trendy decor and the prices are VERY reasonable.
